    I have to admit that when I spoke to a few weeks ago, I was feeling a little preoccupied with homesickness. I was missing Spring in Portland, the way the sidewalks are carpeted with pink flower petals and the moss sparkles with moisture on those first deliciously sunny days.

    Last week I did a bunch of research on going back to school to be a high school English teacher. A month ago it was nursing, but then I panicked about being bad at math and how a simple mistake in nurse-math can kill someone. Nothank you to that. Teaching seems like another impactful option. Life-or-death situations are tragically not absent from schools, but at least they’d never hinge on my ability to do math without a calculator. This happens every six months or so.

As we enter vacation season, I’m thinking about how writers need be out in the world, having experiences to write about. But we also need lots of time to write. We need real vacations from the work, too. And is it really a vacation if we’re searching for stories the whole time? Or, in Maggie’s case, cramming as much reading material as possible into a carry-on?
