On Nantucket, construction is constant. Turn down nearly any road and you’re bound to see something being built, renovated, or torn down. In February, islanders saw the demolition of the Downyflake, the iconic year-round restaurant on Sparks Avenue, along with several neighboring structures, all cleared to make way for an 18,000 square-foot mixed-use complex.

Back in February of 1951, Gay Head (now Aquinnah) was the last town in Massachusetts to receive electricity, trailing most other towns in the state by about 20 years. “It was a big to-do in town,” recalled the late June Manning, who was four years old at the time, in a 2017 interview conducted and edited by Linsey Lee, oral history curator of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum.

When I worked at the Martha’s Vineyard Times six years ago, we collected “perfect Vineyard Days.” Back then, my idea of a perfect way to spend a Vineyard day looked something like this: morning yoga at the Yoga Barn; breakfast at the Art Cliff Diner; and a long stretch at Lambert’s Cove Beach, where the clear waters, soft white sand, and distant views of the Elizabeth Islands offer New England’s own slice of the Caribbean.
