If you look up midwest fashion, you don't get Vogue articles and street style fashion coverage. You get pictures of christian girl autumn-esque, pumpkin spice latte drinking women in skinny jeans, knee high boots, and infinity scarves. Yet, this isn't specific to just the midwest, as many other regions of the United States are equally unrepresented. When people hear fashion week, it's likely that Kansas City is not the city they associate the term with.

For twenty-nine years, Kansas City FilmFest International has brought audiences, films, and filmmakers together to celebrate the power of storytelling through the cinematic arts. Hitting last weekend-alongside KC's Panic Fest up at Screenland Armour-the famous cinema collective event featured categories full of features, shorts, and even screenplays.

Each dip into The Unicorn's world premieres or mid-workshopped plays has felt like a breath of fresh air, especially in the last few months. Major movie releases have been on an unbreakable tepid streak, most of my favorite TV shows are wrapping up, and every podcast I listen to is about the same thing: just how Very Bad Things Are. In that time, Unicorn has repeatedly delivered unexpected, left-field home runs that I feel, on a personal level, thankful for.

There's a very specific kind of film that arises from eras where the MPAA doesn't know what it was doing. Before the invention of the PG-13 designation, there were just G-rated films, PG, and R. Films like Gremlins and Temple of Doom forced the ratings board's hand when parents became upset that there was no clear line in the sand between family-friendly and A Lot Of Dead Bodies.
