Sometimes you just have to tip your hat and recognize that you are outmatched. That was exactly the case with Villanova (12-9, 5-5 Big East) as it fell, 87-74, to No. 10 Marquette (17-3, 8-1 Big East) at the Fiserv Forum. In what was Villanova’s weakest defensive performance of the season, the Wildcats, who allowed 67.8 points per game entering Friday night’s game, gave up 87 points to the Golden Eagles. This is the fifth time Villanova has given up 80 points or more this season.

In the Big East, no team is safe until the final buzzer. Villanova learned this the hard way as the Wildcats (12-8, 5-4 Big East) fell to Georgetown (13-6, 4-4 Big East), 64-63, at the Finneran Pavilion. Despite Villanova leading by six or more points for the first 17 minutes and 26 seconds of the second half, Georgetown’s 9-0 scoring run in the final 2:34 of the game, capped off by Micah Peavy’s layup with 1.7 seconds left, gave the Hoyas their first lead of the second half.

It’s a tradition for Villanova fans to stay standing until the Wildcats score their first basket of the game. Fans’ legs must have gotten tired as it took three minutes and 39 seconds for graduate forward Eric Dixon to lay in the first Villanova basket of the night. Villanova (12-7, 5-3 Big East) was in need of one thing after back to back Big East losses: a win. The narrow 75-73 win over Providence (9-10, 3-5 Big East) at the Wells Fargo Center provided just that. The win didn’t come easily.

Blue is a lucky color for Westfield boys lacrosse. Not only is it the school color, but blue was the color of sky on Wednesday as Westfield defeated Ridgewood, 10-9 in overtime, in the North Group 4 sectional final. Last year, the Blue Devils lost to the Maroons under a hazy red sky. The win came in dramatic fashion. After Ridgewood received a one-minute penalty for slashing with just over a minute remaining in overtime, the Blue Devils siezed their opportunity for revenge.

For former Villanova star Maddy Siegrist, this past year taught her all of the above. “The first year [in the WNBA], everything is always challenging just because it’s all new,” Siegrist said.
