Efforts continued Thursday to contain a brush fire that has blackened an estimated 976 open acres near El Monte County Park. As of Thursday morning, firefighters had the blaze — which has been dubbed the Monte Fire — at about 25% containment. “The fire continues to burn at a slow to moderate rate of spread,” Cal Fire said. “Crews were able to take advantage of favorable weather conditions overnight. The fire is still burning in a remote area with steep, rocky terrain.

Law enforcement asked for the public’s help Wednesday in identifying the suspect in the unsolved murder of a 20-year-old man during a Juneteenth event in San Diego two years ago. Jonathan Shields-Pullum was shot multiple times on June 17, 2023, around 6:45 p.m. during a celebration at 2455 Cushing Road in Liberty Station, according to the San Diego Police Department. He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
