Three Coronado Middle School Robotics teams competed in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) San Diego Regionals competition last month, where Triton Tribe (Porter Aston, Ian Braham, Evan Freedland, James Friedman, Jameson Laaperi, and Landon Ward) qualified for the Southern California (SoCal) Championships. The SoCal Championships are the penultimate tournament of the season, where teams from different leagues in the region will be competing for a spot at the international FIRST Championship in April.

The Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners recently voted to move a preliminary renovation proposal for the Coronado Loews Resort to a phase of environmental review. The plans submitted by 51st St. & 8th Ave. Corp, who operates Loews Hotels & Co., currently suggests an over $220 million renovation to the property to enhance and update the property as a modernized luxury resort space.

At the most recent Coronado City Council meeting, held on December 17, a decision was made to fill the current council vacancy left by John Duncan as Duncan stepped into the role of mayor by process of appointment. City staff were directed to open an application period for interested persons to submit a one-page statement and up to two additional pages of relevant material through January 13.

The Coronado High School (CHS) Robotics teams (Tiki Tech and CocoNuts & Bolts) are off to a strong start this year with an impressive showing at their first competition in November. Following the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) competition, Tiki Tech moved to the top of the local Gauss League, placing as number one out of 19 teams and ranked in the number five spot out of 74 teams in the larger San Diego Metro FTC region.
