It's impossible to find two power-conference college football programs farther apart geographically than Miami and Washington. They have faced each other only three times, but the Hurricanes and Huskies have a unique bond. Before they ever squared off, they split the 1991 national title, with 12-0 Miami crowned by the AP poll and 12-0 Washington getting the nod from the coaches poll.

College football coaches spend countless hours scouting and scheming, looking for any weakness in their opponent. Some offensive coordinators have as many as 100 plays at their disposal. The best of the best know what to call at the right time. But even the perfect play call doesn't always work - these coaches are, after all, counting on 18-to-22-year-olds to execute under pressure. Editor's note: All week, The Athletic is looking back at the best of the first 25 years of the 2000s in college football. I had a simple question to ask that proved to be more complicated than expected: Who do you think is the best college player over the past 25 years?

Share Last week, Stewart Mandel and I talked on “The Audible” about our best bets among teams in their season win totals for 2025. It was during that conversation that I decided to jump back on the Clemson/Dabo Swinney bandwagon, which seemed mostly abandoned over the past few years. The Tigers are one of my best bets to go over. They do open against a loaded LSU team, but the game is at Clemson, where Dabo is 102-11 (though they lost two games there last season).
