Economists have four explanations for why mothers focus on child care while fathers focus on paid labor. First, women may earn less than men on average, so that couples simply allocate their time in a way that maximizes total income. Second, childbirth could affect a mother’s health and, thus, her ability to work. Third, women may face discrimination in the labor market, and this discrimination may encourage them to focus on child care.

Newly available data show that there is substantial economic mobility, but also lingering inequality, with American Indian and Black children tending to achieve worse economic outcomes than children from other races who have parents at the same income level. This is a concern for anyone who cares about the economy, because intergenerational economic mobility shapes the economy’s overall productive capacity.

This paper studies one of the largest spatially targeted redevelopment efforts implemented in the United States: public housing demolitions sponsored by the HOPE VI program. Focusing on Chicago, we study welfare and racial disparities in the impacts of demolitions using a structural model that features a rich set of equilibrium responses.
