    The City of Fort Myers Fire Department recently earned a prestigious honor when they were awarded Accredited Agency status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). The department met the criteria established through the CFAI’s voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program. “It's a major, major accomplishment for this organization that was created in 1901 to now be accredited," Fort Myers Fire Chief Tracy McMillion said.

    FGCU’s athletic Director Colin Hargis recently announced Raina Harmon as the new Head Coach for FGCU’s Women’s Basketball team. Harmon spoke at a news conference on campus. “I can’t begin to express how excited and honored I am to stand here today as the new Head coach at the Women’s Basketball program here at Florida Gulf Coast University," Harmon said.

    In celebration of Black History Month, we bring you a moment in Black History in Southwest Florida. Dr. Ella Mae Piper was a pioneer, a prominent businesswoman and philanthropist in Fort Myers. She was born on March 8, 1884, in Brunswick, Georgia, and developed a passion for service as she was growing up, inspired by her mom, Sarah Williams. Piper attended Spelman College, then graduated from Rohrer’s Institute of Beauty Culture in New York City.

    In celebration of Black History Month, we bring you a moment in Black History in Southwest Florida. Sanibel Colored School, also known as Sanibel School, is a U.S. National Registered Historic school located in Sanibel, Florida. It was once a Baptist church, built around 1915 and became the only Colored School on Sanibel Island. Church builder James Johnson allowed black families from the island and nearby areas to educate their children there starting in about 1924.
