Here are some memorable traditions we hope get revived in 2025. Lunar New Year comes with many glorious traditions. One that’s disappearing is something called Dragon’s Beard Candy. It’s stringy, hand-pulled, and delicious. But two things complicate whether this will be around SF in the future.

We’ve all heard of Emperor Norton by now, surely. But here are some shadowy San Francisco figures you may not have heard of. Old Man Kelly, an urban legend documented by historian Woody LaBounty, was a hermit who built a shelter up on the north end of Ocean Beach. The legend is that the guy would exercise vigorously, swimming to Seal Rocks and running on the beach. Like many San Francisco heroes, the lines between reality and legend are blurry. Was he a hermit? A hobo? A tramp?

A neighborhood Safeway was narrowly (and temporarily) saved by a departing district supervisor and a handful of community activists. Can they prevent it from closing February 7th, 2025? In January, community members gathered for a rally near the truck loading area at the Safeway on Webster and Geary. There were a few politicians, lots of nicely printed yellow Food Justice signs, and momentum.

A dive bar lives a thousand lives, sometimes in one day. But over the years, Zeitgeist was known for two things: delicious fried food and good live music. And then the inspection happened. Wait, before you freak – they passed all other parts of the inspection. But the outdoor kitchen was considered such a horrible oversight (that passed inspection for at least the last 12 years…) that they were told to halt and cease fries. Zeitgeist evokes many an emotion among San Franciscans.

Most of the jugs of milk you get from your local grocer are pasteurized. This process heats up liquids (including beer!) to keep it from souring or going bad; it also prevents disease by killing tiny pathogens. It’s named after a French scientist who fucked around and found out, for the good of all humanity, that heat kills disease. You can still get unpasteurized, or “raw,” milk. People who drink it are more susceptible to traveling down the Crunchy to Alt-right pipeline.

This holiday season, an artist’s building is opening its doors to the public. 1890 Bryant Street Studios is a building in the Inner Mission which houses over 80 artists. Because of things like the smell of turpentine and the need for good lighting, not to mention the mental and emotional of making art, artists need studio space. Having a little community can help an artist thrive. The building itself is a Vera Cort building. This is one of those “if you know, you know” names to drop.
