The government is in the final stages of starting the licensing process for more than one million artisanal miners currently operating illegally, according to Ms Agnes Alaba, the Commissioner for Geological Survey and Mines at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. The licensing process falls under the new Mining and Minerals Act, 2022, which introduced small-scale and artisanal mining licenses to formalize and regulate a sector that has long remained informal and largely unmonitored.

The administrator of the Namugongo Muslim site has criticised the government over what he called the continuous sidelining of the Muslims in developing the site. Mr Musa Nsubuga, the administrator of Namugongo Muslim Martyrs Site, told Daily Monitor that despite more than 100 Muslim martyrs being killed between 1874 and 1876, the government has never taken an initiative to develop the site as it did at the Catholic shrine and the Anglican site.
