A perennial complaint in the YA world is that there are no YA books published for younger teen readers. In some ways, this is true. There is a dearth of books featuring and appealing to readers who are just outside of that middle grade demographic and looking for YA books with characters who are 13, 14, or 15. For reference, among the classics of YA, Charlie from Perks of Being a Wallflower is 15; Melinda in Speak is 14; and Steve in Monster, 16.

Thank you to the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards Committee for honoring Fungi Grow. I have found the Horn Book to be a guiding voice and influence both in my time illustrating and writing picture books and as an avid reader of the genre. I have long admired Maria Gianferrari’s writing and her love of the natural world. It’s an interest we both share, and I was delighted when offered the opportunity to illustrate Fungi Grow.

This morning, the American Library Association announced the Youth Media Awards. The most popular being the Caldecott and Newbery Awards. But, in actuality, there are over 20 award announcements this morning! Today, I’m sharing the winners and honors and a little note about what each award is for and what it all means. While most people are talking about the Emmy’s and the Oscar’s, I’m anxiously awaiting this Monday morning to see all the news about kids’ books.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Children’s Literature Program at Simmons, we caught up with Rodney Fierce ’12MA about what led him to study children’s literature, his work at Sonoma Academy, and his recent experience on the Horn Book Awards Committee. Fierce can easily identify the three people who inspired his career path. “My grandmother, my thesis advisor for my undergraduate degree, and Professor and Graduate Program Director Cathryn Mercier,” says Fierce.

With a family that loved reading paired with Gina's business degree, they built a business to bring books to Northern Minnesota.
