This season, the Hickory Ridge girls soccer team was as good as it's ever been. Like only the 2016 Ragin' Bulls squad, this year Hickory Ridge advanced to the state quarterfinals again, and on Thursday, it took its school-record total for wins in a season into a fourth-round matchup with Charlotte Ardrey Kell in Harrisburg. Ardrey Kell beats Hickory Ridge 2-0 in semi-final state playoffs. Hickory Ridge's Peyton Steele (16) fights for the ball during Thursday night's loss to Ardrey Kell.

Cabarrus County didn't produce any state champions at the N.C. High School Athletic Association's Class 2A/4A Track and Field meet in Greensboro Saturday. But there were some local athletes who came awfully close. In Class 4A, for example, Hickory Ridge's Chase McCullough (165 feet, 4 inches) took second place in the boys discus at N.C. A&T State University's Marcus T. Johnson Track. McCullough, a junior, had the highest finish among Cabarrus competitors Saturday.
