Over a number of months of hard work and busted knuckles, we have bolted on a lot of go-fast bits to our Ford Muscle project 2001 Mustang Cobra, titled Project Apex. The goal of the car is to build a fun-and-fast track day toy that is still streetable. Initially, we added the Road and Track Box from Maximum Motorsports. Then we upgraded the Cobra’s IRS with Maximum Motorsports Rear Grip Package. At the track, the car was discernably better thanks to the suspension upgrades.

There is no doubt that with a few aftermarket parts, modern Mustangs equipped with the 5.0-liter Coyote engine can generate exponentially more power. With that increase in power often come hardships down the line, specifically in the driveline of the car. Many enthusiasts have voiced complaints about the stock MT82 transmission, which comes on the 2011 and newer Ford Mustangs.

However, this conveniently located battery does bring some complications. You see, our 2001 SVT Cobra is being modified for road course duty. Vehicle dynamics and weight distribution are crucial to the Cobra’s ability to navigate corners.
