Over 13 kilometres of roads have been improved in the Castlecomer Municipal District so far in 2025 with roughly the same amount to be completed before the end of the year. Almost €1.7m was allocated to the roads worked on, the longest stretch of which was a 2.2km improvement of Protestant Road, Coolcullen, completed at a cost of €282,880.

Kilkenny ranked 16th out of 40 towns surveyed in round one of the 2025 Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) League, dropping from second place in 2024. Although the city was still rated as “clean to European norms,” it’s Kilkenny’s worst result since 2018 when it also came 16th.

Senator Malcolm Noonan gave his support to the newly formed Local Democracy Taskforce and asserted that local authority was negatively affected by the abolition of Kilkenny Corporation. “I spent 16 years on Kilkenny Corporation, that is what I call it, and then Kilkenny County Council after another Kilkenny man decided in 2014 to abolish it unfortunately,” he said, in a reference to then Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan. “Kilkenny had a unique place in Irish history.

The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, announced the launch of the next call for expressions of interest to developers under the Croí Cónaithe Cities Scheme this week, but Kilkenny will not see any increase in apartment building as a result. The scheme is a fund which aims to support the building of apartments for sale to owner-occupiers by bridging the gap between the construction cost and market value where the cost of building is greater.
