Stock markets in the US soared today after the world’s two largest economies majorly de-escalated their trade war. Predictably, Donald Trump has presented the outcome of talks between US and Chinese officials in Switzerland over the weekend as a victory, claiming this afternoon: “They’ve agreed to fully open China”. We’re still waiting on the evidence that Beijing has in any way been trumped.

As economists and politicians alike examine the finer details of Thursday’s much-touted US-UK trade deal, a mixed picture is emerging to that central question: is this really a win for Britain? Certainly, news that Trump has sealed his first post-“liberation day” bilateral deal has offered a boost to global markets, fueling optimistic that this is the first of many to come. Hence why Germany’s stock market rose to a record high today.

“This heinous act of aggression will not go unpunished,” Pakistani leader Shehbaz Sharif warned India today, as the nuclear-armed rivals inch closer to all-out war following a spate of deadly Indian airstrikes on Pakistan this morning. India’s foreign ministry, meanwhile, insists: “The whole country is happy we took revenge”.

After three long years of negotiations, Britain and India finally struck a free trade deal today, which UK ministers are labelling "the biggest and most economically significant" bilateral trade agreement to be signed since Brexit. Keir Starmer, who is expected to travel to India soon to meet his counterpart Narendra Modi, insists this “landmark deal” will add £4.8bn a year to the economy by 2040.

Nigel Farage’s insistence that he heads Britain’s “main opposition party” is that bit more grounded in reality this evening, after Reform UK gave both Labour and the Tories a drubbing in local elections, and swept to victory in the Runcorn and Helsby by-election. Reform UK gained a new MP in Cheshire by the thinnest of margins: Sarah Pochin beat Labour’s Karen Shore by six votes, making it the closest by-election result since 1892.
