With this new step in my academic journey, my research focus has shifted from using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) for discovery-based analyses to exploring new possibilities with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS).

Upon receiving my acceptance letter into medical school, one of the first decisions I made was to move back home with my parents. I made the decision in a heartbeat, thinking about the financial benefits, the emotional support, and the multigenerational knowledge that I would obtain during an extremely difficult four years of my life.

I did not have an epiphany or a life-changing revelation, but I did find myself in a full inversion. I had traveled for work to a sports medicine conference where I was speaking and sitting on a panel about a topic with which I was very comfortable and familiar.

This 72-year-old woman comes in for a problem visit to discuss right thumb pain. She has had mild discomfort at the right metacarpophalangeal joint, especially when she bends it, for about three days. She has been applying arnica cream without relief. Also — I steel myself, as I know what’s coming — her back hurts all over.

Advocates of FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) often talk about the end result of using their model: freedom with your time, money, and resources. And far be it from me to argue with those concepts. I am not anti-FIRE – after all, I want you to find financial freedom so you can live a life you love and practice medicine because you want to and not because you have to due to financial constraints.

But when you get down to it, diet Dr. Pepper does have a tight hold on a lot of physicians. Throughout medical school, residency, fellowship, and now my attending position, I’ve known a surprising amount of doctors, specifically surgeons, who seem to live on diet Dr. Pepper.

Okay, have an epinephrine injector. Oh, then we started telling parents to quit introducing highly allergenic foods in infancy, with the fear of causing food allergies. Guess what? That was completely wrong, and we created a generation of food-allergic kids with only one possible treatment, avoidance.
