My college swim coach would often say, “If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.”For the past several years, the West Virginia Legislature has been a partner in the fight against food insecurity, and with more of our neighbors than ever not knowing where their next meal is coming from, lawmakers should continue to be part of the solution to end hunger in the Mountain State.

When people are fed, futures are nourished. That’s why this September, Mountaineer Food Bank is joining its fellow Feeding America partner food banks in the nationwide campaign — Hunger Action Month — to raise awareness about the prevalence of hunger in our communities and the impact it has not only on our neighbor’s body and health but their overall life, and in turn, our communities as a whole. In West Virginia, 266,370 of our neighbors don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

It started out as a typical soccer game. Carlos Menezes was playing in his Over 59 adult soccer league. He was about to make a corner kick when a player from the other team fell. Menezes told KATU that he really wanted to win that day. But when he went to go check on the fallen player, all of that left his mind. “When I looked at his face, I knew,” Menezes said. “I could tell right then that he wasn’t doing well.”Menezes would learn later that this player had fallen into cardiac arrest.

This past Tuesday, they visited health care workers at Providence Portland, giving much-needed hugs and “carrot kisses” to the staff. “This is the best lunch break I’ve had all year,” said Colleen Martin, who works on the Safety Committee at Providence Portland. Providing this kind of relief to people in the health care field is a service on its own.
