When a nurse at St. Helier Hospital in Sutton, England, walked past one of the hospital’s drains last year, they immediately did a double take. Someone was stuck six feet down, confused and shivering. The nurse immediately contacted the RSPCA, then stayed waiting by the drain — and soon, a crowd had gathered. The entire nursing staff quickly became invested in the rescue, and when the RSPCA arrived to help, they had an audience.

After their family was no longer able to care for them properly, Rambo and Diesel were taken in by Humane Society of Monroe County. Both dogs were underweight and needed a lot of TLC, but before long, Diesel was healthy again and was quickly adopted. Rambo was another story — or so his rescuers thought. At 10 years old, Rambo was an old man who had trouble getting around.

Kristin Erwin was driving home from her sister’s house when she suddenly got this feeling in her gut telling her to take a detour. “Even though I have plenty of fosters, as I was approaching a road that is notorious for discarded animals, I couldn't fight the urge to drive down it and see if there were any new victims,” Erwin, president of Streethearts Project, told The Dodo. As she pulled onto the infamous dumping road, she held her breath — and sure enough, a little face appeared in the road.

When a terrified stray cat got himself stuck four stories up on the fire escape of a Boston brownstone, a local pet sitter named Julie sprang into action. The cat, later named Cosmo, had been stuck for over 12 hours when Julie arrived. He wanted to be rescued — but he was also terrified of humans. “What’d you do honey?” Julie asked Cosmo in a video posted to TikTok.
