Plans to slash the budgets and non-clinical staff at integrated care boards by half could increase pressure on council services, a former president of Adass has warned. Past president of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (Adass) Melanie Williams told LGC that "to enable people with health needs to live well at home and leave hospital successfully, health needs to work well with councils and such significant reductions in ICBs are a risk to that".

The government has confirmed that support with Woking BC's debt will be provided for any new authorities as part of local government reorganisation in Surrey. Woking issued a section 114 in June 2023 and commissioners were appointed in December. The district had a debt of £1.9bn, while its revenue budget was just £16m.

The Liberal Democrats won overall control at two counties and are largest party in four other councils after the local elections. They are set to gain more seats in councils than the Labour party, becoming the second most-successful political party in this year's local elections. They have gained overall control in both Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire CCs, which were previously under no overall control but with the Lib Dem leaders.

The Conservative party has lost control of Devon CC but no party has gained overall control. Liberal Democrats will become the largest party with 27 of the 60 available seats with Reform in second with 17 seats. Reform has won in the Hatherleigh & Chagford ward, previously held by the leader James McInnes (Con) who stood down at the election. The Conservatives have lost at least 29 seats and will have six councillors representing the party.
