“Unfortunately, it’s looking like the best hurricane season ever on the East Coast right now,” Kelly Slater recently said, lamenting his hip recovery in conversation with Kai Lenny. Following the extended tenure of Hurricanes Franklin and Idalia, another pulse of tropical swell — dubbed Lee — brought more long period spoils to the perpetually starving East Coast masses. “There’s been nonstop swell over here,” photographer Daniel Pullen told me.

The beloved father to Andy and Bruce Irons, and Grandfather to Axel Irons, has passed away. Tributes for Phil Irons – the father of Andy and Bruce Irons, and grandfather to Axel Irons – have been growing in number since news broke of his passing. California-born Phil moved to Kauai in 1970, where he lived for the remainder of his life. In 1978 Phil and his wife Danielle had their first son, christened Phillip Andrew Irons, Bruce Irons came the following year.

In a soon-to-be forthcoming interview, an anonymous North Shore charger recently told us, “I think it’s good so many people surf Pipe. I don’t know if I’d go on any waves out there if I was alone and other people weren’t pushing me to send it.” Add a thick wetsuit, a borrowed surfboard, a very imperfect end-section, and an unapproachable rock jump to the fear of solo-surfing a shallow slab, and it’s easy to see why Nathan Florence was so tentative in this clip.

What’s that old Mark Twain quote about Northern California? “Shittiest waves I ever had, was a summer in San Francisco…”Something like that. If you venture north of Pigeon Point between March and August, you’ll surely be greeted by fluttering southerlies, fog so heavy you can taste its crisp kiss, and hordes of wave-starved, well-groomed, tech-funded enthusiasts posturing clumsily over exhausted locals.
