Writer-director Kyle Butenhoff has designs on statement cinema with Laced. In his first feature, the director has attempted a tense and seedy domestic dramatic thriller, one baked with layers of symbolism and societal commentary. And while the filmmaker has conceived the foundation well enough, he struggles to inject genuine depth into the characters. As a result, this is a movie with grand plans but inelegance in the way of execution.

BLOOD IN THE SNOW FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! There is something uniquely engaging about Barret Mulholland’s first feature, Last County. The director “likes to make movies that entertain.” But there’s a curiosity to how the film, written by Matthew and Sean Kohnen, does so, especially because the premise seems about as typical as thrillers come. But what’s so striking is that the filmmakers seamlessly incorporate a variety of genres into the story.

BLOOD IN THE SNOW FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! As its name would suggest, director Adam Kirkey’s Greed & Gore goes all in on the schlocky, silly, stylized violence of the B-movie. Screenwriters Kirkey and Mathieu Lamarche cleverly inject horror to amp up the proceedings, making this short action flick a bloody good time. The entire story is filmed in and around a single house set, creating a strong sense of place for the characters in the play.

With Concrete Utopia, director Eom Tae-hwa has found himself a victim of ambition. The film has many narrative threads, all interweaving, all highly symbolic. But while the screenplay by Tae-hwa and Lee Shin-ji is engaging and the acting is excellent, the action-adventure-drama is so preoccupied with its many ideas that it can’t fashion a satisfying conclusion. Among the residents of the Hwang Gung Apartments are a young married couple, Min-seong (Park Seo-joon) and Myeong-hwa (Park Bo-young).

A Little Glass of Rum has lofty ambitions. While thoughtfully framed, shot, and paced, director Carah Chafin’s true endeavor lies in the interaction and dialogue between characters. As such, the short film format is a perfect cinematic roundtable. And indeed, the screenplay by Lauren Keller is a gripping dissection of wrongdoing and the philosophy surrounding it. Stan Ailor (Stuart Ford) has a perfect life.
