Since starting formal education, Lily, 13, has tried four schools. First there was a public school, then a Montessori, then a Steiner, and finally, a public school again. But each time she left knowing it wasn't the right fit. In 2024, Lily decided on homeschooling. It's Friday afternoon and Alessa Dumbrill is planning a night out in the city, but it can be a long process. "You have to plan a lot, so lots of googling," the 21-year-old anthropology student says. "If it's a day trip, it could be two, three hours ringing up places, making sure everything's suitable: terrain, doorways, entrances, just the venue itself being spacious enough."Alessa lives with muscular dystrophy, a degenerative condition, and she uses a wheelchair.

"Chronically tired" teenagers could benefit from later school start times as sleep deprivation puts their health at risk, according to a clinical psychologist and researcher. Flinders University Associate Professor Jessica Paterson said more than half of Australian teenagers were not getting the eight to 10 hours of sleep per night needed for optimal functioning. "Bad sleep is a really significant risk factor for a lot of things and probably the most serious is suicidality," she said.
