You have to wonder why anyone bothers going into business in Australia. It’s bloody hard graft and businesses are going to the wall in increasing numbers. Insolvencies for businesses going into administration for the first time in the financial year to April have already surpassed 2023-24. A total of 11,053 businesses went into insolvency in 2023-24 and by the end of April there were 12,105 insolvencies for this financial year.

We have just witnessed an extraordinary day in Australian political history – the Liberal and National coalition splitting for the first time in nearly 40 years and only the third time since they came together in 1949. The first break was in 1972 after Gough Whitlam beat Billy McMahon. They came back together before the 1974 electionAnd there were another four months in 1987 over the ‘Joh for Canberra’ campaign.

Earlier this year, news.com.au launched The Great Aussie Debate, a wide-ranging, 50 question survey that has uncovered what Australians really think about all the hot topics of 2025.

If you think things haven’t been easy under Albanese, imagine how you’d go under Adam Bandt. The Greens leader is so confident he will be kingmaker in a hung parliament that he’s instructed the Treasury and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet to draw up a post-election brief based on their policies. A “red book” and “blue book” are traditionally put together with briefs from the public service so an incoming government can hit the ground running and understand the lay of the land.

We'll retain all our Senators, Melbourne & we’re looking good in Ryan, Wills & Richmond – we'll know more soon. While our national vote has increased, the collapse in the Liberal vote means that Labor will win the seats of Griffith with Liberal preferences, and Brisbane too.
