Traveling Renaissance Village May 10-11The Traveling Renaissance Village will make another appearance Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11 at the Adair County Fairgrounds. The event will feature sword fighting, belly dancing, fire shows, food and more. Admission is $5 per person or $9 for a weekend pass. After performing well enough at the state tournament held at the beginning of March, five individuals and two teams from Nodaway Valley and Orient-Macksburg’s archery teams are going this week to the national tournament. The National Archery in the Schools national tournament the Wolverines and Bulldogs are competing in is May 8-10 in Louisville, Kentucky. This is another in a run of several years that the area has produced national qualifiers in archery.

Being a school administrator has been one of the most full circle moments James Larson has experienced. The 2007 Nodaway Valley graduate returned to his alma mater a decade after graduating to teach sixth grade literature and physical education at the middle school. He took over as elementary principal in the 2021-22 school year and has also coached in the same gym he once played basketball in.

The Mount Ayr Raiders edged the Lenox Tigers in a down-to-the-wire finish in the boys team race while the Central Decatur Cardinals cruised to a team championship on the girls side of the Pride of Iowa Track Championships Monday, May 5 at Nodaway Valley High School. Mount Ayr’s boys scored 137.5 to Lenox’s 136, with the Raiders the last two races head-to-head over the Tigers.

A couple of local veterans have been recognized for their longevity as members of a local American Legion post. Bruce Jensen, of Bridgewater, and Dean Cass, of Fontanelle, both 91, were given certificates recently as 60- and 50-year members, respectively, of Carlson American Legion Post 247 of Fontanelle. Both are Korean Conflict veterans. Jensen served in the U.S. Army, voluntarily enlisting in 1955.

More than 80 people spent the morning of Thursday, May 1 planting more than 180 trees at Lake Greenfield, known locally as the new lake. They were able to make quick work of the task that will one day result in Greenfield’s healthy tree canopy being restored from its pre-tornado status. “It feels a lot like spring,” Greenfield Municipal Utilities General Manager Scott Tonderum said. “We’ve done a lot of work out here prior to this to get it ready for the planting.

A full-sized house rolling down the road on a truck isn’t a sight you see every day in Adair County, but it’s one that Ryan Baltensperger sees all the time. Baltensperger owns Ensor Movers, based in Johnson, Nebraska, a company he has been with for 31 years. They specialize in moving structures of various kinds from one place to another. Their Facebook page shows them moving houses, barns, large grain bins and more. “I enjoy it, as a rule,” Baltensperger said.

A lot of laughs are promised by those who are performing in Nodaway Valley’s spring play that is due for two performances this weekend. “Goldilocks on Trial” is set for 7 p.m. performances Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3 at the Warren Cultural Center. A spin off of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” this show gets into a precarious situation. “The three bears are taking Goldilocks to trial for breaking and entering and eating their porridge,” sophomore Taylor Day said.
