Essendon expects emerging midfield gun Jye Caldwell to be back into full training in February after the breakout Bomber's off-season hip surgery. It will make for a condensed lead-up for Caldwell ahead of the club's Opening Round clash with Gold Coast on March 8, with the Bombers' campaign starting a week earlier in 2025. Caldwell carried the hip issue in the back half of last season, but has resumed running and has his eyes set on the beginning of the club's season. "He's tracking as expected.

History is beckoning for Harry Sheezel. If the North Melbourne emerging superstar can win the Roos' best and fairest this year for the second time, he will break an almost 90-year competition drought. According to the AFL's history department, Collingwood's Des Fothergill is the only player in VFL/AFL history to have won two club best and fairests before turning 20 in 1937-38, a feat Sheezel, who doesn't turn 20 until the middle of October, is on track to equal.

The return of Riley Thilthorpe, albeit as a late cameo, gave Adelaide a different complexion last week against St Kilda, and the club's No.2 pick from the 2020 draft is the linchpin of the Crows' draft cohort that will be called on to shape the next step for Adelaide under coach Matthew Nicks. Thilthorpe's absence until round 18 due to a knee injury was a significant blow for Adelaide to deal with on the eve of its season.
