    A derelict housing estate dubbed "Scotland's Chernobyl" for its eerie ghost-town like appearance is finally about to be razed to the ground. The tenements at Clune Park in the Inverclyde town of Port Glasgow were built a century ago as housing for shipyard workers but have lain mostly abandoned for years. A stand-off between private landlords and the local council has thwarted redevelopment, leaving the site frozen in time with just a handful of tenants remaining.

The nationalised Ferguson shipyard was among the shortlisted bidders - but lost out to Gdansk-based Remontowa which was able to undercut it on price. The announcement prompted some politicians to ask whether "social value" had been considered as part of the evaluation.

    A road bridge in southern Scotland has been closed to all traffic at short notice after engineers issued a safety warning. The Kirkcudbright Bridge is shut to vehicles until further notice, leaving drivers in one residential area cut off from the rest of the Dumfries and Galloway town. A diversion is in place but people living in the Merse area, on the western side of the River Dee, now face a six-mile drive on country roads to get into the town centre.

    The nationalised Ferguson Marine shipyard has appointed a new permanent chief executive. Graeme Thomson will take over as boss of the Port Glasgow firm after the departure of the interim CEO John Petticrew and the sacking of his predecessor a year ago. Mr Thomson has most recently worked as programme director for Babcock at Rosyth in Fife where he oversaw delivery of the Type 31 frigate programme for the Royal Navy.
