Some 18-card games just don’t quite make it as being enjoyable on the table. Take for example Adventurous, an upcoming release by designers Dustin Dobson, and Milan Zivkovic and also from Button Shy games. The game aspires to be frankly bigger than it should be. The game states it is for one-to-four players and while true at even three players it is largely boring.

There is a certain near charm about 18-card games. Their small table footprint, and easy transport features coupled with generally easy to grasp rules, make them an increasingly favoured sub-genre of gaming. That many such games are also available in print-and-play format doesn’t hurt either, as they become low-cost and easy-to-create games. Shallow Regrets is a new 18-card game upcoming from – yes, you guessed it – Button Shy.
A.I. Apocalypse

There are games that, when I sit down to write a review, I shudder trying to determine what should be written. This week’s review of A.I. Apocalypse is one such game. A 2024 release, designer and artist Marian Hilgers from publisher Owly Moly Games, is a game that became a conundrum at our table. When you crack the smallish box and thumb through the cards – this is a card game – the science fiction/cyberpunk-themed art is excellent.
TRIKE

Game rules can be deceiving. There are times a read through of the rules raises expectations which play soon dashes, and of course the opposite is equally true. Take, for example, the Trike by designer Alek Erickson and recently released by Kanare Abstract. The rule set for Trike, which are super straight forward and easily grasped, the game frankly sounded rather mundane, so the expectation for this one was not overly high.
Yorkton Terriers swept in SJHL semi final set with Melfort

YORKTON – The hopes for an SJHL championship for Yorkton Terrier fans ended Wednesday as they were swept in their semi final series by the Melfort Mustangs. The Terriers were down three-games-to-none and needed a win as they took to the Westland Insurance Arena and through the opening 20-minutes neither team managed a goal. Zac Somers finally put a goal on the board scoring 52-seconds into the middle period for a 1-0 Mustang lead.

Every time I sit down to pen a review on behalf of The Meeple Guild, in the back of my mind is the game that might be one to make my top-five a year’s end. It’s only a quarter of the way into the year, and I have to say there are already a half dozen games which are going to cause headaches come December as I try to decipher which will make the final five. Which brings me to Rummy Snap from www.sdtoyz.com which will most certainly be one which vies for a top-five rating a year’s end.

It’s always interesting how some games are received once on The Meeple Guild table. Take, for example, The Plot Thickens: Detective Edition, released in 2023 from Bright Eye Games and designed by Mike Callahan, Brigette Indelicato, and Thomas Rochelle, which is a storytelling game that most certainly is not a genre we have gravitated to.

Regular readers will know myself and guilder Trevor have become definite fans of offerings from Button Shy Games. The publisher does mostly 18-card games – almost all available in Print ‘n Play – and since they have a small print footprint they are quite low cost in such a format. That many of the games coming out from this publisher are two player they fit snugly in our wheelhouse over a cold drink or coffee too. The latest such game to hit our table is the yet to be officially launched Dionysia.

Even among the most devoted board game players, you may not know who José Raúl Capablanca is. But, if you are a chess player who has studied the game’s history even a little bit, you will most certainly know of the Cuban-born Capablanca, who was the third world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. Lesser known, though, may be that he created a variant of chess, not surprisingly known as Capablanca Chess. It incorporates two new pieces and is played on a 10×8 board.

You might say we are experiencing something of a Renaissance of collectible card games (CCGs) – now Trading Card Games (TCGs). There are new ones launching almost weekly it seems – reminiscent of the plethora of games launched in the vapour trail left by the success of Magic: The Gathering when it launched back in the early 1990s. MtG started a fad, that like most fads faded, although it remains hugely popular. And now a rebirth in interest in the field of TCGs is upon us.
