Storing and searching logs is a problem as old as software. Many tools exist to do it. It's solved. But this post focuses on a different problem. What if your users want to explore the logs? What if you have billions of logs? Fundamentally, this is a problem of scale in multi-tenant architectures. It's something that Vercel most solve with runtime logs, for example.

Building a Next.js app is easy these days. With generative AI webdev platforms like v0, Lovable, and Bolt and AI-assisted IDEs like Cursor and Windsurf, you can pretty much spin up any Next.js app you can imagine in a few minutes, a day tops. The challenge with webdev, of course, isn't webdev. It's getting the backend right, and making sure you have infrastructure set up for auth, data persistence, caching, logs, etc. We're already seeing advances in AI there.

I'm just putting it all together here and focusing on helping you plan your exit before things get messy. In my last article, I showed you how to push your Postgres analytics to its limits - from columnar storage extensions to BRIN indexes and vertical partitioning.

Postgres is known for its strength and reliability but, it wasn't designed to handle thousands of simultaneous connections. While vertical scaling helps with data volume, connection management needs a different approach. Scaling Postgres for analytics? You should give Tinybird a try.
