CAMPAIGNERS fighting to protect a 150-year-old tree from being axed have submitted legal advice to Southend Council as they up their campaign to save it. The tree, affectionately named Chester, sits on Chichester Road and is due to be chopped to the ground under plans for a 14-storey block of flats to replace the former Chuchill’s diner.

Fly-tipping - Images of waste dumped in the alley in Westcliff (Image: Amy Heathcote) Furious Westcliff residents have called for immediate action after “months of fly-tipping” in an alleyway has seen mattresses, bin bags and household waste build up to a “disgusting” level. Residents living near the alleyway, which joins Ronald Park Avenue to Tintern Avenue, have been distressed by the build up of rubbish and fear rats and pests will follow.

Flames - Smoke pouring out the door of the property (Image: Katie Dorrington) A CHERISHED home was torn apart and gutted after a fuse box fire consumed the property minutes after the family made their escape. Flames engulfed the home, in Lippits Hill, Basildon, at around 7.30pm on Saturday with mum Sam Dorrington, 52 and daughter Katie, 26, escaping the property after initially trying to smother the fire.

Anglo Rayleigh is set to open in the site of the former Oyster Wharf, following the sports bar’s closure in Eastwood Road, Rayleigh, in August last year.
