Whilst the announcement this week was light on detail, it did at least formalise Labour’s support for the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) expanded offer and the wider Environmental Land Management (ELM) programme.

Last week saw the publication of new analysisfrom the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) on the latest Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) expanded offer. This follows the organisation’s evaluation of the SFI 23 offer from last year but builds in the array of new payment actions in the expanded offer.

They collect familiar pop songs and weave contrived stories around them. The problem is, pop songs are written as complete stand-alone entities, self-contained stories and philosophies that last but minutes. Typical Broadway musicals, on the other hand, develop songs that have a symbiotic relationship to the plot.

It’s an entertaining, spectacular ride. Adaptations of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel have a checkered past. The book was (initially) a commercial failure compared to Fitzgerald’s previous efforts.

The CLA has responded to a recent England only consultation on proposals to introduce targeted badger control, revise the cull licensing application process, and introduce greater disease risk transparency for cattle traders (via the ibTB online tool). The CLA was supportive of the proposals in the consultation. Importantly, the consultation acknowledges that badger culling is an effective means of controlling bTB, and that this is supported by scientific evidence.
