Like many other authoritarian leaders, President Trump fancies himself a connoisseur of the arts while simultaneously seeking to eliminate art he deems offensive. Fortunately, the American system of government prevents Trump from controlling the arts the way other nations’ dictators have.

OK, probably not, but for the first time in my life I am seriously entertaining the idea that Andy Kaufman faked his death. The oddities and coincidences are just too great to not consider the possibility. What changed my mind from considering the idea a hoax to a real possibility?

The Phoenician Scheme, 2025, 2 starsExclusive to MeierMovies, May 19, 2025Something extraordinary happened to me while writing this review. After staring at my empty screen for an hour, I finally hit upon what I thought was a unique idea: I will compare Wes Anderson, a maximalist, to the great Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer, a minimalist. But when I finished, a strange familiarity washed over me. So I checked my review of Anderson’s The French Dispatch, from 2021.

I used to think the closing credits of Skidoo (1968), which are sung by Harry Nilsson, were the weirdest in cinema history. But then I reacquainted myself with Tarzan, the Ape Man (1981), which features end credits over footage of a topless Bo Derek being groped by an orangutan. If you’re a fan of short films — or of film history in general — you will enjoy my newest list. It’s a ranking of all the short films I’ve ever seen (about 3,500) by year. My previous lists of short films listed the movies alphabetically and by star rating, but not by year. So this new list is an important resource. Particularly fascinating are the oldest films on the list, the ones dating to the invention of cinema, in 1888. Go here to see the list.

What are the strangest closing credits in movie history? The award probably goes to either "Skidoo" (1968) or "Tarzan, the Ape Man" (1981). See https://t.co/6POTc0ELec. #Tarzan #Skidoo

I often review older films. "Threads," from 1984, is worth revisiting (and comparing to its American equivalent, "The Day After"). See https://t.co/7v9toxuf28.

Thoughts on "La Gloria," one of the best films from the recent Florida Film Festival: https://t.co/Z5FBK1O0Uq. #LaGloria
