South of Midnight is home to an array of hulking and terrifying monsters, most of which serve as the game's climactic boss fights. There's Two-Toed Tom, the giant alligator with an insatiable hunger, Huggin Molly, a spider-like woman who steals children, and the Rougarou, a fierce and fast bird-like creature, to name just a few of South of Midnight's biggest threats.

South of Midnight is far from a bad game. Its story is filled with memorable moments, both heartbreaking and bittersweet, and it's all wrapped in a beautiful layer of reverence for American Deep South folklore. That's all on top of some stellar presentation, which includes striking visuals and a riveting jazz, blues, and country-inspired soundtrack. That quest puts Hazel in front of an array of fantastical creatures and monsters, the vast majority of which are inspired by Deep South American folklore. The Honey Island Swamp Monster and Altamaha-ha are two such folklore-inspired beings.

South of Midnight opens with player-character Hazel packing her things in the middle of a major storm. Hazel is soon joined by her mother, Lacey, who asks her to check on the neighbors. While Hazel is doing just that, her home is swept away in a flood, with her mother trapped inside. Hazel chases after her mother but falls into the water and loses sight of her as she's swept downstream.
