Exclusive: New data sheds light on four opaque detention sites in France that are run by the UK Migrants attempting to make their way to Britain were held at UK-run detention sites in France more than 9,000 times last year, “alarming” new figures show. Data obtained through freedom of information laws shows there were 9,139 detentions at the short-term holding facilities near Calais and Dunkirk from July 2023 to June 2024.

Drax, the UK’s biggest power station, is sourcing fuel from American wood pellet plants that have broken environmental regulations more than 11,000 times, an investigation for The Times has found. The violations took place at six mills owned by Drax Group, which ships wood pellets produced there to its power station in Selby, North Yorkshire.

All Sheila Mae Dobbins wants is an apology. In 2014, an industrial facility producing wood pellets opened so close to her house in Gloster, Mississippi, that she could overhear conversations between managers and staffers as they worked and smell the fumes the plant pumped into the air. Dobbins, a 59-year-old mother of two, relies on an oxygen tank to breathe, as do her sister and her brother-in-law, who also live in the town.
