Business RICE can be grown locally. Yet 90 per cent of this vital commodity is imported. According to some estimates, this contributes anywhere between $100 million- $200 million to the food import bill annually. Which means that, since the heyday of rice production ended roughly a decade ago, billions have been spent to put rice on our tables. The UNC government’s continuation, on May 20, of a seed distribution programme begun under the PNM in 2022 is, thus, a welcome development.

When the measure was announced in December, it generated tremendous anxiety and concern. In contrast, as the curtain comes down, few might notice. That says something about its impact.

Editorial WHAT is the essence of being a Trinidadian? It’s hard to say. But the extraordinary life of Mark Loquan, who has died at 63, might supply something of an answer. His death is a giant loss. Mr Loquan, who passed 14 months after a brain cancer diagnosis and seven months after being bestowed the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, was a unique individual who, nonetheless, embodied something recognisable in all of us.

Editorial THE STATE has no business being in anyone’s bedroom. That is an uncontroversial position. Or at least it should be. In its regressive ruling of March 25 which re-criminalises anal sex between same-sex adults and resets the law to 1925, the Court of Appeal has effectively invited police to peep through the curtains. The case, brought by the state against activist Jason Jones, was about gay rights. But the implications of the court’s ruling are wider.
