All indicators suggest what started with a bang is likely to end with a whimper. When the measure was announced in December, it generated tremendous anxiety and concern. In contrast, as the curtain comes down, few might notice. That says something about its impact.

    Editorial WHAT is the essence of being a Trinidadian? It’s hard to say. But the extraordinary life of Mark Loquan, who has died at 63, might supply something of an answer. His death is a giant loss. Mr Loquan, who passed 14 months after a brain cancer diagnosis and seven months after being bestowed the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, was a unique individual who, nonetheless, embodied something recognisable in all of us.

    Editorial THE STATE has no business being in anyone’s bedroom. That is an uncontroversial position. Or at least it should be. In its regressive ruling of March 25 which re-criminalises anal sex between same-sex adults and resets the law to 1925, the Court of Appeal has effectively invited police to peep through the curtains. The case, brought by the state against activist Jason Jones, was about gay rights. But the implications of the court’s ruling are wider.

    Editorial THE CONFLUENCE of several factors – roadworks, the annual uptick in excursions to the Divali Nagar, month-end shopping and a visiting circus from Mexico – has created a situation in which there are fears of a traffic nightmare along the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway. This should not be. Traffic near to the Divali Nagar, as well as during one’s daily commute, is already a painful ritual for many.

    News The PNM’s Laurel Lezama-Lee Sing has resigned as a government senator and former Tobago House of Assembly chief secretary Ancil Dennis replaces her in the Senate, the Office of the Prime Minister has announced. A post on the Office of the Prime Minister’s Facebook page, at about 6 am on September 26, said Lezama-Lee Sing resigned on September 25. The Prime Minister then advised President Christine Kangaloo to appoint Dennis as a government senator. Dennis is the PNM’s Tobago Council leader.
