The year was 1992. Carl Helstrom got on a plane to Colorado Springs to attend State Policy Network’s first Annual Meeting, hosted by the Coors Foundation. It wasn’t the image you’d expect to see from attending one of our recent meetings (a room of 1,500 leaders from 500 organizations in all 50 states).

Since the Obama Administration, the government has been heavily pushing and subsidizing the use of green energy. The inappropriately named 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is highlighted as “the most significant climate legislation in U.S. history” by the Environmental Protection Agency and included massive amounts of funding to spur the move from traditional to green energy systems.

State Policy Network is deeply saddened by the passing of Bill Becker, the first CEO of the Maine Policy Institute, a valued affiliate organization. Bill passed away on December 26, and we join his family, friends, and colleagues in mourning and celebrating the life of this remarkable leader. In the early 2000s, Maine lacked a free-market hub where ideas and research could flourish.

It’s never a good sign when governments try to dictate speech. In 2022, California politicians proved this maxim (again) when they passed AB2098, a law dictating what doctors were allowed to say to their patients. AB2098 threatened to revoke doctors’ medical licenses for sharing “misinformation” about COVID-19.
