Introduction Polyploidy, also referred to as whole-genome duplication (WGD), is a recurrent event in the evolution of plant genomes (Van de Peer et al., 2009; Jiao et al., 2011; Soltis et al., 2015), and increasingly recognised as an important evolutionary driver outside the plant kingdom (e.g. Donne et al., 2020; Novikova et al., 2020). In plants, the question is not really whether a plant is polyploid, but rather how long has it been since a WGD event last occurred?
