    Ireland's environmental watchdog has warned the equivalent of three Olympic-size swimming pools of untreated raw sewage are flowing into Ireland's water systems every day because of a lack of water treatment plants. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) raised the concern in a detailed report which has criticised Uisce Éireann. In its Urban Waste Water Treatment report for 2022, the EPA said over half of Ireland's wastewater discharges are not meeting EU standards to protect the environment.

    Last night's death means the same number of people have been killed on Irish roads so far in 2023, as in all of last year. 155 people have died in road collisions - up 36 on the same time last year. It comes ahead of a high visibility road safety campaign for the October bank holiday weekend.     The Government will announce a plan today to build 2,700 new student beds. The low cost housing will cost 434 million euro. Today's announcement will see the construction of 2,700 beds on college campuses across the country in what will be a joint partnership between the European Investment Bank and the Housing Finance Agency. This new scheme is backed by a 40-year €200 million European Investment Bank loan.

    Liverpool are in Europa League Group E action tonight - they welcome Toulouse to Anfield for an 8pm start. In another 8 o'clock kick off, Brighton host Ajax in Group B. An injury to Danny Welbeck means Evan Ferguson could feature for the Seagulls. West Ham are in Greece to face Olympiakos in Group A at 5.45. Also at that time, Rangers are away to Sparta Prague.
