In late March, when sea ice extension in the Arctic should be at its highest, scientists studied satellites showing how far the ice reached across the region. What they found was the lowest extension ever recorded since researchers began observing the spread of sea ice 45 years ago. The 2025 sea ice extended 5.5 million square miles, breaking the previous lowest figure recorded in 2017 of 5.8 million square miles.

Arctic communities have long been noticing changes in the sea ice across Alaska, with ice setting up later most years and proving less dependable throughout the winter many years. If the vote had passed, possession and importation of alcohol would have been allowed, while the sale would have remained prohibited.

Sea ice scour has been identified as the most probably cause of last week’s break in the fiberoptic cable that provides high-speed internet and cell service to much of the Arctic.
