Arctic communities have long been noticing changes in the sea ice across Alaska, with ice setting up later most years and proving less dependable throughout the winter many years. The impacts have been felt by Arctic hunters and travelers who depend on the ice, as well as by coastal communities, which see greater coastal erosion from fall storms that set in before sea ice has formed to protect the shoreline.

The sound of drums, dancers and singers filled the Barrow High School gymnasium this week as hundreds of people from across the North Slope Borough and beyond gathered to celebrate Kivgiq 2025. This year’s Kivgiq, or Messenger Feast, included the traditional gathering and celebration, but it was also a time to come together and mourn the loss of those who died in the recent crash of Bering Air Flight 445 traveling from Unalakleet to Nome as well as other tragedies and losses in recent weeks.

Voters in Anaktuvuk Pass rejected a proposal to loosen the village liquor restrictions last week. Preliminary results from the election, which was held Jan. 30, show that with a vote of 58 to 40, voters opted to keep the current local option law in place, which prohibits the sale, importation and possession of alcohol. If the vote had passed, possession and importation of alcohol would have been allowed, while the sale would have remained prohibited.

Sea ice scour has been identified as the most probably cause of last week’s break in the fiberoptic cable that provides high-speed internet and cell service to much of the Arctic. Communication company Quintillion said in a release Monday that technical experts have identified sea ice activity in the fault area, which they have determined is 32 to 37 miles north of Oliktok Point.

For the second time since its installation, the subsea cable that provides high-speed internet and telecommunication service has been severed, this time near Oliktok Point. Quintillion, the company which owns the cable, said repairs may not be possible until late summer, and the company president said in a release that it is exploring a work-around via an overland cable.
