    It was kind of a nutty idea to start with: Fly sixteen and a half hours from New York City to Delhi, India, stay overnight in an airport hotel before flying the next day to Kolkata, where we’d meet up with friends midway through their six-week tour of  the subcontinent. Spend nine days with them—four each in Kolkata and Varanasi and one in Bodh Gaya (where Siddhartha found benightment)—before reversing the travel nightmare.
