Players were assigned jersey numbers, with some rookies hoping to eventually switch to their preferred numbers. While some rookies were awestruck by the facilities, others appeared more prepared and less surprised by the experience. The smile on Ahmed Hassanein’s face said it all. And if it didn’t, his laugh sure did.

The smile on Ahmed Hassanein’s face said it all. And if it didn’t, his laugh sure did. The Detroit Lions defensive lineman — their seventh-round draft pick out of Boise State — was practically bursting with joy May 8 when I caught up to him on the practice field after the first of a three-day rookie minicamp.

Nice try, Michigan football. Of course, how you read that depends on who you are. If you own copious amounts of Maize-and-Blue gear and if any pet you’ve ever owned has been named Bo, Bennie or Brady, then you should consider Michigan’s self-imposed suspension of coach Sherrone Moore for two games a smart, honest and earnest effort to accept blame and head off any sanctions the NCAA might soon hand down over the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal.

I’ve never seen anything like the drama unfolding inside the Detroit Red Wings between the team’s general manager and star player. It leaves me wondering who’s going to put an end to all of it and when? This isn’t good for the organization, and it sure isn’t any good for frustrated fans who want the team to finally get over the hump and make the NHL playoffs after a franchise-record nine-year drought.

Cade Cunningham played well for the Pistons but didn't reach the superstar level of play needed to win the game. While the Pistons showed significant improvement this season, they will need Cunningham to take another leap forward to become true contenders. As great a season as the Detroit Pistons had, what will sting the most is remembering they were up by seven points with 2:35 left in Game 6 of their first-round playoff series May 1 with the New York Knicks.
