The winningest team in Costa Rica is asking FIFA for a spot in next summer’s Club World Cup and is willing to take legal action if denied. Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, which has won 30 league titles, wants FIFA to enforce the rule that forbids clubs from the same ownership to participate in the tournament. “The claim is based on the principles of eligibility set in the rules of the tournament,” the club said in a press release.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Javier Aguirre was appointed coach of Mexico’s national team for the third time and will replace Jaime Lozano, the Mexican Soccer Federation announced on Monday. Former defender Rafael Marquez, who played in five World Cups for Mexico and was the coach of Barcelona’s reserve team, will be Aguirre’s main assistant. The 65-year-old Aguirre led Mexico to the round of 16 in the 2002 and 2010 World Cups.
