On March 22 at Fair Grounds, a local hero delivered a win for the home team. Six-year-old gelding Touchuponastar , bred by Keith and Ginger Myers' Coteau Grove Farms, outclassed rivals including 2024 champion three-year-old male Sierra Leone to capture the New Orleans Classic Stakes (G2). Natives of Palmetto, Louisiana-whose population numbers in the hundreds-Keith and Ginger come from farming backgrounds. Keith's interest in Thoroughbreds was sparked early on.

On Feb. 1, Phil and Christine Hatfield were able to toss their own hats in celebration. On that day, their six-year-old mare, Saffron Moon , earned the pair their first graded stakes win as owners. In the Endeavour Stakes (G3T), the daughter of Malibu Moon closed furiously in the stretch to post a 2 1/4 length victory. She covered the 1 1/16-mile distance in a stakes-record 1:39.92.

For Richard Perkins, Christmas 2024 came a day late. On Dec. 26, two different Perkins homebreds-one a veteran campaigner, one a promising runner-won black-type stakes. At Fair Grounds, then-five-year-old mare won the Nelson J. Menard Memorial Stakes by a determined head. Over at Gulfstream Park, then-three-year-old filly delivered a neck victory in the Rampart Stakes over top-class opponents. Growing up in Illinois, Perkins was passionate about horses.

If ever a horse personified their name, it's . The son of More Than Ready is not only an eye-catcher; he's also a grade 1 winner with talent to spare. Bred by Hinkle Farms and owned by Victory Racing Partners, More Than Looks capped off his career by winning the Nov. 2 FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T). In 2025, he will hold court at Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky., for $15,000 (live foal, stands and nurses).
