1 Shortage of Academic Nurses For a number of years there has been an international shortage of academic nurses. This shortage has been exacerbated by various factors, including the ageing academic workforce, with many nurse academics approaching retirement age, meaning there will continue to be an exodus of skills and experience from the nursing academic environment.

Future predictions for the nursing workforce make sobering reading, with the staff shortfall worsening in the years ahead (Shembavnekar et al, 2022). The ambitions set out in the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, published last year, aim to address this. It is estimated, however, that around 20% of nursing students leave their programme before graduating (Hamshire, 2019).
