After a close 5-4 vote, the United States Supreme Court made it harder for environmental regulators to limit water pollution. The court ruled March 4 that the Environmental Protection Agency overstepped its authority under the Clean Water Act with water pollution permits that contain vague requirements for maintaining water quality in a case in San Francisco about the discharge of raw sewage that sometimes occurs during heavy rains.

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s … the Goodyear Blimp!No, it isn’t Superman but the Goodyear Blimp probably raises as many, if not more, comments like this when spotted in the sky. This year is a special one for the blimp because it turns 100 years old on June 3. The first one was named Pilgrim. The flying billboard — there are four of them — has been providing aerial coverage at major sporting events since the 1955 Rose Bowl.

Mendenhall Homeplace will again be ablaze with light as the popular Candlelight Tour returns Dec. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.The tour, sponsored by the Historic Jamestown Society, has become a tradition in Jamestown since it began in 2016. This year’s tour will feature the beautifully decorated downstairs of the Richard Mendenhall House as well as the Madison Lindsay House. Both houses and the barn will be open and decorated.

On Aug. 3, 1990, President George H.W. Bush declared November as National American Indian Heritage Month, now Native American Heritage Month. It is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse culture, history and tradition of the hundreds of Native American tribes across the United States. The government now recognizes 574 Indian tribes.

The Environmental Management Commission (EMC) recently announced it is accepting public comments on proposed standards for three per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in groundwater. Comments are open Nov. 1-Dec. 31. The EMC and Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will hold three hearings in November and December to receive public comment.
