October was National Substance Use Prevention Month and according to the organization, Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM), it is a month that our nation “highlights the vital role of substance abuse prevention in both individual and community health.”One particular substance being widely used by our youth today is marijuana, which has seen an increase in youth use since its legalization.

Carol FormicaThis past weekend I watched the movie “Coach Carter,” a film based on the true story of Ken Carter, played by actor Samuel L. Jackson. In the movie, Carter accepted the position as a basketball coach for Richmond High, an inner-city high school in Northern California whose student-athletes were struggling academically and athletically.
