Residents of Blades learned details of a solar farm planned for a nearby wooded area at a meeting held last week at Seaford Fire Hall. Many were concerned because 12 acres of property in town were recently clear cut for a townhouse development. Whitney Hastings Pogwist served as spokesperson for the owners of 34 acres of woods between the town of Blades and Sussex Highway. She and her cousins inherited the property from their grandfather, Norman E. Hastings, who died in 2003.

Blades has a new town administrator, Crystal Gregor, who was promoted from administrative assistant after former town administrator Lisa Marks was let go. Teresa Todd is being hired as part-time administrative assistant. Both are “efficient, knowledgeable and interested in improving the town,” Blades Mayor Nancy McAdams said. These decisions were announced after an executive session following the town council meeting Feb. 10.

The long-term effects of losing poultry flocks and what it means to commercial poultry growers was the subject of a “Lunch and Learn” session presented via zoom by the University of Maryland Extension on Feb. 13. The speaker, Dr. Jordan Shockley, associate Extension professor, grew up on Maryland’s Eastern Shore before attending the University of Kentucky for undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees in agricultural economics. His first job as a youth was picking up chickens in broiler houses.

In a workshop meeting Jan. 20, the Blades Town Council and a few residents again hashed out proposed changes in the town charter. The document will be sent to the office of State Rep. Danny Short for review — and possibly more changes — before submission to the General Assembly for approval. This process is not likely to be completed before April 7, so all rules and procedures will remain the same for the municipal election in 2025.
