Since the Department of of Government Efficiency (DOGE) began maneuvering government funds in an effort to find waste, I’ve been worried for our land grant universities. No one can look at the way things used to be and honestly argue that government bureaucracy was without flaws. In some cases, layers upon layers of regulations had long outstripped their purpose and had become an unfair burden to farmers.

One of the top entomologist for vegetable crops in the U.S., Dr. John C. Palumbo, has passed after battling cancer. He was a beloved and trusted fixture in the cool crop centers of Yuma, AZ, and the Central Coast. He was 66. Most of his career centered around the Yuma desert growing region, the University of Arizona’s research station there, and issues challenging area vegetable growers.

One of my favorite movies is Apollo 13 (and its close twin, The Martian). Just about the worst thing that can happen, does. The oxygen tank explodes on the vessel’s journey to the moon, leaving the crew’s chances of surviving in question. Jim Lovell, Apollo 13’s commander, once compared it to playing solitaire. So long as another card presented itself, they could play it.

I listened to a TED Talk, featuring Nobel Prize winner Geoffry Hinton, who is one of the originators of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He mentioned ways AI can be used beyond what we already know today. That includes how AI helps us understand complex systems, such as our own biology and making medical decisions more accurate. During his talk, he mentioned how agriculture and crops themselves can be improved using AI.

I'm trying to gauge how the pandemic will impact the U.S. vegetable planting season. If you're a grower, will you take this one-question poll? https://t.co/gBKXTS8mTP #covid19 #farming
