Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1140 President Rich Kresja began the Vietnam War Veterans Day celebration on March 29 by introducing Church of the Nazarene Pastor Ronnie Johnson, who provided a blessing for the group. He was followed by the JROTC Color Guard from Independence High School who presented the American and Tennessee flags and Thompson’s Station Methodist Church Pastor Amber Armistead who sang the National Anthem and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Saturday, March 29, is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a national day of observance for the men and women who served during the 20-year “conflict.” Congress signed the Recognition Act of 2017 into law to commemorate and honor veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, no matter the location. That was a full 34 years after President Nixon proclaimed in 1974 that March 29 would be the first Vietnam War Veterans Day.
