SPINDALE — “We Build! Power Tools! Girls Rule!” Was chanted by 29 young girls holding hammers on Friday. July 26 marked the final day of the Women Roofer’s weeklong WeBuild Camp, which gave rising 4th — 7th-grade girls hands-on experience exploring trades. Throughout the five days, campers chanted the WeBuild mantra as they learned skills required of electricians, plumbers, masons, carpenters, and roofers.

RUTHERFORDTON — North Carolina’s Senate passed House Bill 563 last month, which would put clear rules on the hemp industry if approved by the House. The sale and distribution of hemp-derived consumable products have been legal in NC since the 2018 Farm Bill, but the sector has remained largely unregulated. HB 563 would create standard rules for the sale of hemp products in the state.

RUTHERFORDTON — Vendors hoping to be included in this year’s annual Hilltop Festival on Main Street, Rutherfordton, can apply now. The festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 5, weather permitting. In case of poor conditions, the event will be rescheduled to the same time the following Saturday, Oct. 12. Artists, food trucks, nonprofits, businesses and more are welcome to apply online on the Town of Rutherfordton website.
Forest City businesses react to new social district

FOREST CITY — Monday, July 1, marked the first day of the Burnt Chimney Social District in Forest City. “People can move freely throughout the social district with their alcoholic beverage instead of being confined to the area immediately outside the ABC-permitted establishment,” explained Amy Bridges, Forest City’s community & downtown development manager. “We hope that the social district will bring more visitors to downtown Forest City,” she said.

LAKE LURE — Councilmembers unanimously approved the proposed budget at Lake Lure’s Tuesday night town meeting, which maintains the tax rate at $0.357 per $100.00 of property valuation. Finance director Stephen Ford proposed a budget of $11,073,16 at May’s council meeting. At that time, Ford highlighted that it was a “simplified budget” and recommended that the town periodically review it throughout the year.

CHIMNEY ROCK — Chimney Rock Village passed a $ 648,245 budget for the ‘24-’25 fiscal year at Tuesday’s meeting. The general fund property tax rate slightly increased from 0.11 to 0.13 per $100. The service district property tax rate went up as well from 0.18 to 0.19 per $100. The tax rate would have increased more, but Stephen Duncan, the Village administrator, wanted to avoid that alternative.
